Marshall McLuhan at la Fonderie Darling: A Necessary Collective Exhibit

17.03.2022 – 14.04.2022

For La Fonderie Darling’s Feedback #6: Marshall McLuhan and the Arts, a unique foray into the mind of this Canadian thinker, well-known for his reflections on media and technology. The exhibition – making up part of a series of exhibits and activities – also highlights “his innovative performative and editorial practices” which are juxtaposed with other works and performances of local and international artists.

“Here, the term ‘feedback’ is used to reflect on how the experience of technologies forms how we perceive and understand our world; through the feedback loop between observation, memory, and imagination. It also refers to the basic cybernetic principle of self-regulating systems, which today are an essential part of everything from advertising to criminology, from smart cities to immunology.” - excerpt from the exhibit presentation.

Le Devoir praises this exhibition, but warns of the immersive and sometimes intrusive or bothersome nature of the main concept of feedback. “Several works from 13 artists and collaborators have been assembled in this exhibit, each reviving both the theoretical and physical meaning of the limits that comfort may have in various ways. Blinking lights and audio interference work in tandem, anchoring the visit in an undeniably real and corporeal experience.”
