A Total Solar Eclipse Visible from Old Montréal!

A total solar eclipse will be visible from the Montréal Science Centre on April 8, 2024. This is an event not to be missed, as the last total solar eclipse in Montreal was in 1932, and the next one will take place in 180 years!

What is a solar eclipse? It's the moment when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, creating the "umbra", a very dark shadow, as well as a partial shadow called the "penumbra". The eclipse’s totality is visible in the small area of the umbra where the Moon completely hides the Sun's surface in the sky. The total solar eclipse will take place in Montreal from 2:14 p.m. to 4:36 p.m., and the moment not to be missed is around 3:27 p.m., when the Moon will completely cover the Sun.

Would you like to experience this event in a large gathering? Join the Science Centre’s team, in the afternoon of the 8th of April, to admire this rare phenomenon. Please note that it's important to protect your eyes and never look directly at the Sun, except with safety glasses that meet international standards ISO 12312-2:2015. Thousands of glasses will be available free of charge on the day of the event.
