Skennen’kó:waGathering
The Skennen’kó:wa Gathering invites the public to discover the knowledge, traditions, and living cultures of Indigenous Peoples at the very site where the Great Peace of Montréal was signed in 1701. Held in Montréal’s Old Port, this cultural and community-focused event offers an experience centred on connection, sharing, and the values of Skén:nen, or peace.
Throughout the gathering, visitors can take part in a variety of immersive activities and demonstrations highlighting First Nations practices and traditional knowledge. The program includes herbal tea preparation using local medicinal plants, lacrosse demonstrations, social and smoke dances, cooking in clay pots over a wood fire, traditional corn pounding, black ash basketry, and wampum belt weaving. Land-based teachings, storytelling, and opportunities for exchange will further enrich the experience.
More than a historical commemoration, Skennen’kó:wa seeks to create a space for meaningful exchange and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Through food, movement, art, and storytelling, the gathering reminds participants that peace is not simply an agreement from the past: it is an ongoing practice rooted in respect, reciprocity, and responsibility toward one another and the land.
