PaolaPivi:“Comecheckitout.Lieslieslies”
The exhibition “Come check it out. Lies lies lies” marks the first major presentation of Italian artist Paola Pivi in Quebec, as well as her first travelling exhibition in Canada, originally produced by Contemporary Calgary.
Through a series of sculptural installations, the exhibition explores themes of freedom, truth, and perception by reinterpreting familiar and powerful symbols. The works question the authenticity of iconic images, such as the Statue of Liberty or the polar bear, now closely associated with contemporary issues including narratives of freedom and the realities of climate change.
At the heart of the exhibition, the immersive installation Lies (2018) invites visitors to reflect on the fragile boundaries between truth and falsehood, real information and fabricated narratives. True to Paola Pivi’s distinctive approach, the exhibition blends humor, poetry, and theatrical staging to create surprising assemblages that challenge the relationship between the natural world and the human-made environment.
Both playful and thought-provoking, the exhibition offers a visual and conceptual experience that encourages audiences to question their perceptions, their choices, and the narratives shaping our understanding of the contemporary world.
