SalvadorDalíArchivesMuseum
Old Montréal will soon welcome a major new cultural institution: the Salvador Dalí Archives Museum (MASD), scheduled to open in May 2027. Dedicated to the work and legacy of the renowned Spanish artist, the museum will offer a contemporary perspective on Surrealism, bringing together art, science and emerging technologies.
The museum will stand out for its focus on a lesser-known aspect of Salvador Dalí's artistic legacy: his graphic works. Drawings, engravings, lithographs and sculptures will invite visitors to explore the richness of his creative process beyond his most famous paintings. With access to a collection of more than 1,000 works made available by private collectors, the MASD will present a diverse program highlighting the artist's creativity, experimentation and imagination.
More than a traditional exhibition space, the museum aims to become a vibrant destination for discovery, exchange and creativity. Its programming will bring together various artistic disciplines, science and technology, making Surrealism accessible and relevant to present and future generations. Collaborations with contemporary artists, educational activities and immersive experiences will further enrich this new cultural destination.
The MASD will be housed in the historic Commissioners Building, located at 357 De la Commune Street West, a heritage landmark built in 1875 that once served as the headquarters of the Montréal Harbour Commissioners. Acquired and restored in the 1990s by Daniel Langlois, a pioneer in digital cinema and a patron of the arts, this iconic building will begin a new chapter in its history as it opens its doors to the public.
Founded and chaired by Félix Bélanger, with Lorraine Pintal serving as Executive Director, the Salvador Dalí Archives Museum aims to offer a cultural experience that goes beyond traditional museum conventions. As Lorraine Pintal explains, “We like to say it will be a museum-show.” With this opening, Montréal will join cities such as Figueres, Paris and St. Petersburg, Florida, as a destination home to an institution dedicated to Salvador Dalí, further enriching Old Montréal's vibrant arts and cultural scene.
