Stan Douglas: Two Photography Series

Centre Phi is holding two photography series by Vancouver artist Stan Douglas until May 22, 2022. His most recent series, Penn Station’s Half Century (2021), will make its Canadian debut, and Disco Angola (2012) will receive its first appearance in Quebec.

This genius of the visual arts has worked more than 30 years exploring his “creation process, aesthetic language, and power dynamics”. He recreates decisive moments from cultural, social, and political history, and offers the richness of many points of view on an event and its representations.

Penn Station’s Half Century was ordered by Empire State Development and the Public Art Fund for New York’s Moynihan Train Hall, and immerses us in the history of Penn Station in New York during the first half of the 20th century. As for Disco Angola, it plunges us into a fiction set during the 1970’s in the midst of the Cold War and the Angolan Civil War, and is based around disco’s emergence through a photojournalist’s lens.

Good to know: Centre Phi is organising a multidisciplinary roundtable to inaugurate these two photo series on May 12th from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with Marissa J. Moorman and Candace Sobers, who will be presenting their research on the political history and audio and media culture of Angola during the 1970’s. (More info here, in English, free)
